Structural Audits involve checking the health of existing structures. Gathara Consulting Engineers has carried structural audits in Kenya ranging from checking whether an existing structure can carry additional loads; providing solutions for remedies for structural design faults for example column jacketing; audits for renovations and retrofitting; structural failures of existing structures due to settlement of foundations; dampness conditions; checking the health of an old structure.
Structural audits can either be non-destructive or destructive testing. Non-destructive testing can be done using Schmidt Hammer tests to determine the strength of concrete; or x-rays to determine the size and spacing of reinforcement in the structure. Destructive testing includes taking cores from the existing reinforced concrete structure and crushing the cores to determining the concrete grade/strength. Structural Audits can also include a visual inspection, and measuring of structural elements as well as checking for cracks that may be present. Our portfolio shows some of our projects in Kenya where we have carried out structural audits.
